2/16/2016 0 Comments Chapter OneHe wasn't really feeling up to trying this again. His move from California to Dallas had been somewhat planned (If you call throwing darts at a map planned), but he hadn't realized exactly how much dread he was feeling.
Most people hadn't paid attention to him after the fallout from that fateful night. People were too caught up in the gory details of cops gone bad to give the one good cop in the whole fiasco any kind of second thought. In a way, that's exactly what Detective John Shaw needed. Still, he hadn't been as ready as he had hoped to start over yet again. Now, he was standing next to a body on a Downtown Dallas street on his first assignment in what seemed like forever. "Shaw," he hears a voice that pulled him from his thoughts. Detective Andrews was a tall man with a clean shaven bald head and glasses. He was not exactly full of personality, but was very sharp at finding details. "What do we got?" John asked "Male, in his late 50s, beaten and stabbed by the name of," Andrews paused while he removed the elder from the dead man's body, "Holy shit, it's Rupurt Green." "Who is Rupurt Green?" Shaw asked. "A bastard of a club owner here in Dallas. Owns several of them in fact. Poor bastard must have run across one of the many homeless looking for a hand out." Andrews stood and looked around as he tossed the wallet and its contents onto the hood of the squad car. Shaw bent closer to the body. He noticed a card had fallen and knelt to pick it up. "What does that one say?" Andrews asked. "Looks like a detective agency. Dallas actually got those here?" Shaw asked standing up again. "Yeah couple of them." Said Andrews pulling off his gloves. He leaned over John's shoulder and read the card. "Jasper Maddox. Well that is interesting." Andrews said. "Name familiar to you?" Shaw questioned. "Maddox used to be a detective. Highly decorated and a big badass. Then some shit started to get a bit funny and some evidence ended up missing, but Jasper resigned and the buzz around it disappeared." "Dirty cop." Shaw said with teeth gritted. Andrews didn't catch the inflection. "There is one in every department, bud." Andrews smiled and looked around at the forensic team about them. "Look, I'll follow up with Green's main club if you want to tag Maddox. You being a new face, you may get more answers then if you have me or someone else shadowing you." Andrews had a point, and it was enough for John to pull out of his reluctantcy. "Fine. I'll let you know what he says." Shaw started to walk away, but noticed Andrews was laughing. "Shaw, Jasper is short for Jasperelle. You better read up on her before you go in there or she will eat you alive." John Shaw blinked for a moment and shook his head. Whoever Maddox was, he would find out who killed Green. If he had to get tough with a lady, he would.
